Exploring New Hampshire's Natural Wonders: A Guide for Families
Exploring the natural wonders of New Hampshire is an activity that family members of all ages can enjoy.
As a Professional Photographer in the area for over a decade, I’m always looking for these treasure spots to share with my clients. From lush forests to sparkling lakes, New Hampshire offers plenty of opportunities to explore nature without leaving the state. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful hike in the woods or a more adventurous climb up a mountain, New Hampshire has plenty of beautiful places to explore.
White Mountain National Forest
Your family’s New Hampshire adventure can start with a visit to one of the state’s popular national parks. The White Mountain National Forest is a great place to start. With over 800,000 acres of natural beauty, it has something for everyone. The forest is home to a variety of hiking trails, from the easy Diana’s Bath hike, to the challenging Mt. Washington Trail. If you want to stay in your car and see the best view, drive the Kancamagus Highway that goes through the heart of the White Mountains. Visitors can also take part in a variety of activities including camping, fishing, and cross-country skiing.
Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge
If your family is looking for a more serene experience, consider visiting the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is located in the north-eastern part of the state and is known for its peaceful surroundings and abundant wildlife. Families can spend a day exploring the trails, spotting wildlife, and admiring the stunning scenery. There’s a boat launch, allowing you to take a paddlboarding trip on the lake and a fishing pier where you can try your luck at catching some bass.
Franconia Notch State Park
For some dramatic scenery, take a drive to Franconia Notch State Park. This park is home to the breathtaking Flume Gorge, a scenic gorge with a variety of waterfalls and pools perfect for swimming. Visitors can take a two-mile walk through the gorge and take in the stunning views from the bridge and overlooks. Afterwards, the family can hike to the summit of Mt. Lafayette for even more breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
Merrimack Valley
Your family’s New Hampshire explorers will find plenty of fun activities throughout the state. The Merrimack Valley is home to more than 20 different state parks, offering plenty of outdoor adventures. Families can take a hike up Mount Kearsarge (elevation 2,937’) or explore the boulders in Bear Brook State Park. The area is also ideal for fishing, kayaking, and camping.
Portsmouth, NH
If your family is looking for a more urban experience, the city of Portsmouth is a great place to start. This historic city on the coast of Maine offers plenty of attractions for visitors to explore. Take a stroll through the historic streets of downtown, explore the waterfront, or head to Prescott Park for some fun on the playground. If you have a few extra hours hours and love history, stop by Strawberry Banke Museum. In the afternoon, the family can relax at one of the many restaurants in town or shop in the unique stores.
Enjoy!
